•
Metal, Wood and French Cleats… March’s DIY
•
First we had to figure out the design for our sign working closely with Kelly. Our sign is really big…48″ x 15″. This thing is heavy! We could of easily hug it to the wall without any wood backing but because our headboard is made out of Real Barn Wood from an Amish Barn in Iowa, I wanted to mount it to distressed wood.
•
( I will do a blog post on how we made our Head Board in the next month)
•
I wanted some real gnarly wood and with some great color variation that would show through the cut out words. This wood was so distressed it took some gluing but I didn’t sand it… I wanted it to look rough.
•
I cut three pieces 3″ x 15″ to attach to both sides and the middle. Make sure you countersink all screws so it is flush with the wood.
•
Now How we made our French Cleat(s)
•
First we measured the back of the frame to determine how wide to make the cleats, one on each side of the center support board. Use a single cleat if you do not have a center support board.
•
· Then we cut to our desired length using the chop saw resulting in two boards approx. 18” long
•
· Setting the table saw blade to a 30-degree angle we ripped our two boards down the middle resulting in four 3” wide boards with a single angled side on each board.
•
· The it was just a matter of reversing one half of each board and mounting them on the frame with the angled side Down using drill, countersink, and screws. We made sure that the longer side of the board was Away from the surface of the board.
•
Once the Cleats are attached to the Frame you will then attach the Metal sign with tacks or screws.
•
Looks Amazing!
•
· Now it’s time to attach the other half of the cleat mounts to the wall. This time be sure to have the angle side of the board facing Up with the wider side of the board away from the wall
•
· Then we used a level and pencil to determine where to place the other half of the cleat to the wall. If you find a stud great. Otherwise use a good drywall anchor.
•
· Once the cleats were secure and level on the wall, we lifted our sign up and simple hung it on the wall cleats.
•
It so easy…I actually hold my breath because I never think it will work and it always does. Our Headboard is hung on French Cleats as well!!
•
I love this sign so much…We have been married for almost 45 years and what better way to celebrate then hanging it over your bed…LOL…just kidding but it does look awesome!
•

•
·Finished! Simple, secure and very strong.
•
And if you want to make a sign like ours, you can contact Kelly Rideout, at Far Away Hood at the link below.
•
http://www.farawayhood.com/
•
Now if none of that made sense, I’m attaching a U tube link to making French Cleats so you can have a visual.
•
Send me Pictures!! I want to do an entire blog on DIY projects that YOU have made!
•
Wire Baskets and Wood…the Perfect Marriage!
•
If you look at any Industrial Farmhouse decor there is always one thing in common…Wire Baskets!!
•
When I think of Wire Baskets I think of storage. Especially in my hutch…
•
Keeps me organized.
•
But baskets can be decorative and still serve a purpose. Like my silverware carousal from Magnolia Farms…
•
This Trio Tin Basket also from Magnolia Farms was intended for utensils…or was it? I’ve seen it decorated with Christmas Greenery, Napkins, or even olive oil.
•
My Daughter in law Kristen gave me this zinc metal basket last year for Mother’s Day that I use for all my wonderful Temecula Valley Olive Oils I love to cook with.
•
You could also use this to hold wooden spoons, spatulas, or Wine..that’s great idea!!!
•
I purchased this Paper Towel holder at the The Farmer’s Wife in Old town Temecula. The owner keeps her store full of fun Farmhouse Decor to enhance your home. If you’ve never been there, go check it out next time you are in Old Town Temecula.
•
But how can you get a similar look on your own without spending the money?
•
For Starters… Keep your eyes Open!!
•
Wire Baskets and Wood are the Perfect Marriage!
•
When I go to Garage Sales, I’m always on the hunt for baskets or anything made with metal wire.Re Purposing is also fun when you add your baskets to reclaimed wood.
•
I Found these baskets at a garage sale. Made a killer storage shelf with hooks for hanging coats, purses or backpacks…How fun for a laundry room or even better a children’s bedroom !
•
My girlfriend Kathleen, owner of “Gypsy Sunset” in Murrieta, purchased this rack for her displays in her awesome store.
•
FYI…Stay tuned for Shop of the month for March “Gypsy Sunset “
•
Have a coffee tin can and wire basket? How about attaching wire basket to distressed wood, paint your can distressing it with some sand paper and plant with your favorite flowers or succulents. You’ve got a fun new Wall Hanging with dimension.
•
I found this basket at our house left in the garden by the previous owner. It was half buried with dirt and debris.
•
The chain was broken so I now use it on my coffee table for a faux succulent display.
•
A Hidden Treasure.!
•
In this photo I wanted you to see how using a garage sale frame, chicken wire, coffee can, make a great wall hanging by securing them all to some painted distressed wood !
•
I sold this but I would hang this on my porch with seasonal plants like geraniums or lavender.
•
Change it out with the seasons! A Poinsettia at Christmas, or Tulips for Easter. Just have fun with it.
•
So whether your baskets are in your hutch to keep everything tidy…
•
Or a keep sake from your childhood. Like this old Milk Bottle holder which was used to deliver milk to our porch! Now used to display my glasses…
•
Before you get out your checkbook, look around. You just might be surprised at what you find!!
•
Check out February’s DIY Project : Industrial Table Tray
•
When I first started working with reclaimed lumber, I being of very little carpentry skill, tried different projects that were simple but fun and useful.
•
One of the first items I made was Table Trays or you could also call them TV Trays, Homework Trays, Bed Trays…or Just Serving Trays !
•
So here are the easy steps to make your tray…
•
Pick out wood, try to find pieces without cracks, and cut to size. This tray I actually used 5 inch fencing rather than the 7 inch I normally use.
•
Cut two boards in 24 inch lengths…completed size 10 x 24.
•
Also cut 4 : 3 inch x 10 inch pieces for stands. You can either buy new wood for this or rip existing reclaimed wood at 3 inch strips. In the photo below you will see I used both.
•
Next step is to sand with coarse sand paper. This wood has really raised grain so it it takes a bit to get both sides smooth enough to eat off of.
•
Really important to always wear a mask and protective glasses when working with re claimed wood!
•
Align Wood then pre drill countersinking to ensure the screws are flush with wood
•

•
Assemble all 6 pieces then do a final sanding to make sure all the corners line up and are smooth to the touch, especially on bottom side as it may be used as lap tray and you don’t want to snag clothing.
•
Wash and dry wood then add 2 coats of Wood Safe Mineral Oil for Butcher Block to seal wood.
•
This is a must if you are using to serve food!!
•
Now its time to chose your handle. You can find a 5″ gate handle that usually runs around $5 at Lowe’s or Ace Hardware.
•
I did a search on Etsy and found a killer 6″ Barn Door Handle for $8. No shipping charge.
•
I will add the link at the end of my blog where you can find this handle.
•
Measure, pre drill and attach handle to each side….
•
That’s it…you just completed your first tray.
•
There are so many ways to use your tray…TV Tray, Reading Lap Tray, Serving Tray or just for decor. Have fun changing it up!
•
Two different styles…same concept!
•
This one is made with 7 inch fence wood making it 14 x 24. Great especially for Table Tray used to display decorative items.
•
I Love this narrower tray especially when using it as a lap tray.
•
I like painting trays white and red as well. But my favorite will always be the raw wood.
•
We sell this tray with the Industrial handle for $50, but give it a try.
•
If you decide you would rather keep your nails clean ( mine are a mess) email me or make a comment below and we’ll make arrangements to make a customized tray just for you.
•
My next Favorite Shop for 2017: Forever Florals, Old Town Murrieta
•
Forever Florals in Historic Downtown Murrieta. My favorite Shop for February 2017.
•
MAKING IT BEAUTIFUL!
•
Succulent Container Gardening out of Cast off Items!
•
With all the rain my succulents are going crazy it’s a perfect time to make some original container gardens.
•
My garden is perfect for clippings! Succulents can get very expensive and I think a lot of people don’t realize just how easy they are to propagate.
•
I have Never followed the rules when it comes to succulent container gardening.
•
I simply cut the succulent and plant the cuttings in good Damp Cactus Dirt.
•
The trick is Not to over water!! They will thrive!
•
They do need light so if you’re putting your new arrangement indoors it can be trickier. Porches or patios are perfect.
•
OK, so let’s look at some container choices…
•
I love these containers! Making arrangements in beautiful urns with faux succulents are incredible indoors but I like going a bit more rustic when planting outdoors.
•
So today, I’m going to focus on Outdoor Container Gardening.
•
I found this wonderful succulent booth at the Vintage Marketplace in Temecula.
•
The owners used old carts, wire baskets, rusting containers….Anything works as long as there’s drainage!
•
Here’s a really easy idea. Using 3 soup cans, I lightly rusted. painted and drilled holes in each can for drainage. I then mounted to a piece of distressed wood with a piece of rusted, painted tin for a great accent.
•
I then used on an old chain to hang the arrangement.
•
I filled the bottom third of the can with small pebbles , topping with some good Cactus Soil.
•
It became a fun arrangement for pennies.
•
I used a large discarded paint can to make into this amazing planter.
•
I first cleaned then mounted the can to distressed wood with ice tongs as the hanger before planting the succulents….
•
This gets pretty heavy so make sure whatever you use as the hanger is strong enough to hold the weight. Add holes for drainage, pebbles then fill with dirt. All the succulents are clippings.
•
This can and the ice tongs were found in a trash heap!
•
I tried planting some cuttings in the crevasses of our garden wall and with very little care they are thriving.
•
This crevasse in my wall is the perfect planter space… I simply added moss to help hold the clippings and they grew like crazy. I was actually surprised they took so well and have planted total of 6 more groupings. They are all growing just fine.
•
They’ve been there now for going on 3 years through rain and shine.
•
Pallets made into planters? Nothing new but here’s another way to do it.
•
This is 4 palates, reconstructed, two on each side. Bottoms were added on each section for planting. Each side is around 6 ft in height. They were then hinged so I could place in my garden as a divider. I then lined each palate section with gardening fabric, filled with cactus dirt and planted, mostly with clippings. I water once a week real well and that’s it.
•
What a great way to add dimension to a small side yard.
•
This paint can was used for target practice in the dessert but was perfect to plant some grass and fill with succulents in each hole. It makes a great arrangement.
•
I also used a saw blade and some rusted tin can lids also found deserted. They are fun mounted as background to the planter.
•
This is a Stove Pipe!! A What?
•
I found this pipe rusting at an old abandoned ranch!
•
I cleaned the pipe real well of all the smoke, then wrapped the stove pipe with barbed wire and mounted it to a piece of old fencing.
•
I stuffed it with moss then filled with cactus dirt, gently adding the succulent clippings.
•
I’ve always been sorry I sold this…I love it and it’s a one of a kind!
•
This poor paint can was also used in a former life for target practice…now made new holding succulents! All Clippings… What!!!!
•
Start looking at garage sales for items like this old garden cart. Line with moss then fill it up. Such a statement piece in any garden!
•
Displaying succulents can be so fun..no matter what the setting. On your porch in a beautiful elegant setting…
•
Or arranged on an old kitchen step stool next to a work shed…
•
Displaying succulents can be whatever you want…whether you go elegant or display your succulents in a rusty tin cans. Have fun just making it your own!
•
On my next post on February 10th, I’m so excited to share an awesome store that not only has those incredible urns and indoor faux succulents but many other great floral design items and great home decor.
•
My next favorite place to Shop for February 10th 2017: Forever Floral, Murrieta, Ca.
