Hier hauste der weise Kentaur Cheiron und unterwies Halbgötter und Heroen in der Zucht des Geistes und des Körpers, hier kam es zur ersten Schönheitskonkurrenz der Geschichte - zwischen Thetis und Eris. Der höchste Gipfel des Gebirges liegt im Nordmassiv (Pliassidi 1548 m). Die Ostflanke des Gebirges, von wo aus die weite Ägäis wie ein Spiegel herauf scheint, ist unwegsam und fällt steil ins Meer ab. Im Gegensatz zu dieser wildromantischen, aber unzugänglichen, felsigen Ostküste bietet die Westküste, wo sich der Pelion sanft und buchtenreich zum Pagasitischen Golf hinabsenkt, den Fischern und Seeleuten überall sichere Ankerplätze und so haben sich hier eine Reihe geschäftiger Häfen entwickeln können. Die malerischen Bergdörfer des Pilion, hier in die Flanken des Berges eingegraben, dort wie Adlerhorste auf schroffen Gipfeln festgekrallt und hier wieder versteckt im dunklen Ufergrün eines Wildbachs, sind so verwachsen mit ihrer Umgebung, dass man, wenn man sie von weitem sieht, meinen könnte, sie seien aus dem Berg "herausgewachsen", wie die Wälder ringsum.

<H5> Ein typisches Bergdorf im Pilion sieht aus wie im Bilderbuch - trotzige Steinhäuser mit schmalen Fensterluken und Ornamenten an den Außenwänden, aus Stein gehauenen Treppen und gekanteten Dächern aus grauem oder grünlichem Schiefer, byzantinische Kirchen mit wunderbaren Wandmalereien und Chorschranken, verschlungene enge Pflastergässchen, steinerne Brunnen, Innenhöfe, in denen es nach Basilikum und Gardenien duftet, ein mit Steinplatten ausgelegter Dorfplatz und da und dort ein rauschender Bergbach.
