• <H4> Yesterday I discovered the joys of Easy Off oven spray. You know the spray that our mothers used before self-cleaning ovens. Well I have a self-cleaning oven but the automatic door lock is broken and I don’t want to spend money on getting it replaced plus I never really thought it cleaned that well in the first place. Every Friday is pizza night. I make our own pizza and depending on left overs from the week we have anything from Thai chicken pizza (big hit) to taco pizza (not a big hit). The other week I made a basil pesto pizza and the sauce dripped all over the bottom of the oven and smoke started pouring out. Complete chaos in the house…smoke alarms going off, dogs barking, kids running around, windows and doors being opened, cat escaping and getting in a fight with a neighbor’s cat, ok I digress but the point is the house was a mess and smelled like smoke from a campfire for days. I have tried everything to clean the oven, soap and water and brillo pads, baking soda and vinegar, everything. Finally I decided to call in the big guns and bought Easy Off Heavy Duty spray. I was trying to avoid it because of it being an areosol and taking care of the environment but I was desperate and the family was getting tired of crockpot meals. I remember my mom using this stuff with her face covered with a rag while toxic fumes covered the kitchen, but I have to say I was very impressed with this version. No toxic fumes, no house smelling like a chemical factory and it worked really quickly too. Very impressed. Now I won’t say that my oven is sparkly clean but at least the next time I bake it won’t send the neighbors running over to see what is wrong.
• <H1> Fall Forecast
• <H4> It’s October here in the northwest and that means several things…crisp mornings, pumpkin spice lattes and boots. While I love my strappy sandals, I love my boots even more. I rejoiced when skinny jeans tucked into boots became all the rage because that look is a favorite of mine. When I was in my late twenties I bought my most expensive pair of shoes …black, knee-high, genuine leather boots with a three-inch heal. I loved those boots and wore them for years. Now the look is ankle boots which I admit I have had a more difficult time embracing. I’ve decided that in order to pull this look off the boot must have a heal, otherwise I look like Robin Hood. The other component to this look is a top that flows or a long sweater. I don’t want to look like a sausage casing nor something out of 17 magazine. The icing on the cake with this look or the whipped topping on the latte is a long necklace. When I was in Turkey I purchased all of these fabulous 24k gold-plated pendants with gemstones. The designs range from Fatma’s hands (which is a middle eastern symbol of protection for women) to elephants, to geometric shapes encased with stones from Iran, Turkey and Jordan. I attach these pendants to gold-plated chains and then embellish them with vintage jewelry and components that I find at antique stores and estate sales. I love these long necklaces and have so much fun designing them as each one is unique. These long necklace look especially good with the mentioned look below but also can cross multiple seasons as they look great with long sundresses.
• <H1> Beauty in the Chaos
• <H4> Sometimes I feel like a duck….calm and serene on the surface of the water but paddling like hell underneath. It started with wrapping up my summer jewelry shows then slid right into back to school. No big deal right? Every family with kids does the back to school dance, except this family has chosen to dance to a different drummer and so I homeschool our four daughters ages 9-13. Most of the time we function in a controlled chaos but between the butterfly garden in the kitchen and making sure daughter #1 is meeting high school requirements and daughter #3  is reading, daughter #2 stays busy so she doesn’t terrorize her sisters and #4 daughter who would rather draw then do math stays on task, I someone lost myself down the rabbit hole and it took a strong hand to pull me out. Enter a recently retired husband who looked at the family schedule and said, “What can I do?”. I don’t think we as women are comfortable asking for help. We just do and do because that’s the way it’s done and somehow if we run a little faster and juggle one more plate we will be able meet everyone’s expectations, but instead we end up with Fiestaware on our head! My pastor gave a wonderful sermon on Sunday about de-stressing your life. Third on the list was to recharge your soul with beauty. He said that you are never closer to the Creator than when you are creating. Designing jewelry recharges my soul and brings beauty to my life. When I put it to the side in order to fulfill all the other needs my soul suffers, my mood suffers and by default everyone around me suffers. So with the help of my husband’s strong and capable hand that has taken on much of the girl’s extra-curricular schedule it has enabled me to find beauty in the chaos of my life. God bless my husband.
• <H1> Don’t kill a spider with a blowtorch
• <H4> I just read in the paper the other day about how a man tried to kill a menacing spider in his home with a blowtorch and ended up burning down his house. No one was hurt (they didn’t say anything about the spider but I think it probably got away-crafty buggers that they are) so I feel I can giggle about the overkill in trying to rid your home of a member of the arachnid family, but the whole incident made me think of overkill in my life, particularly when it comes to accessorizing or (and this is difficult to admit to) my precious leopard print. I came down the stairs one day and my daughter said that I looked like I should be roaring.  I now limit myself to one maybe two leopard print accessories per outfit. I once read that a good rule of thumb is to get dressed, then look in the mirror and take one accessory off, so if you are wearing a really large, fantastic necklace then take off the large, dangly earrings and if you want to wear those fun, outstanding earrings then take off the watch. Another good rule is to not have your necklace and earrings match perfectly. For most of the necklaces I create I will wear with them med/large size silver or gold hoops or diamond hoops. I find that they then don’t compete with each other and it makes the necklace a real focal point.
• <H4> One of my favorite movie quotes is from Steel Magnolia when the older female character says in that southern drawl, “What separates us from the animals is our ability to accessorize.” How true that is but you just want to be careful that your daughter doesn’t mistake you for something in a petting zoo!
• <H1> The African Queen Gone Upscale
• <H4> The classic movie “The African Queen” is one of my favorites. To see Bogart and Ms. Hepburn play opposite each other makes me sigh and long for the way movies used to be made…lots of character development less special effects. I was thinking about that movie when I created this double strand necklace. Two opposite colors and textures but they play off of each other, sort of like Bogart and Hepburn. The large clay beads are from Honduras. I purchased them from the Lenca Indian women who use clay from the jungle and make the most incredible vases and bowls using an 18 step process that has been passed from mother to daughter. I was able to have them deviate from the vases and make pendants and beads for me. I still have hundreds of clay pendants in my jewelry room waiting to be strung but my supply of clay beads is almost depleted.  I purchased the apple coral and turquoise during one of my trips to south China so this is truly a United Nations necklace. It’s a substantial piece that looks great with browns, khaki, oranges, blues.  Also could wear this necklace as I have pictured below or pair it with a tee-shirt, jeans and a pair of fabulous healed shoes. Sometimes the necklace needs to be the main actor in the ensemble and sometimes there is nothing like a little Bogart to carry you away down an African river.
• <H1> Tagua Nuts
• <H4> Gumballs? Really abused marbles? Actually they are dyed nuts from the jungle and I have been obsessed with these delightful, spheres of colored kernels. I first came in contact with them when my husband and I were in the Amazon rainforest and a monkey with a very bad disposition threw one at us. Who knew that monkeys are territorial? I seem to have missed the survival briefing on not going into the Amazon with a guide who is drunk, but the discovery of these nuts made up for the time in the hospital when I was covered with 200 plus mosquito bites, but I digress.
• <H4> These little gems are also called vegetable ivory as they have the same color, appearance and feel as real ivory and have been used for buttons, jewelry, figurines and decorative objects. When we were in Peru I came across a couple selling them in the market. I was elated to find such a richness of color and to already have them drilled with holes ready for stringing was a jewelers joy. I bought what they had and my husband carried them as goes the standard shopping procedure.
• <H4> Where I live spring is finally loosing its death grip and being replaced with the prelude to summer. The stores are filled with vivid hanging flowers and every front porch step seems to welcome guests with pots of nature’s bounty. It is at this time that I bring out my beautiful tagua nuts and sting them into long strands interlaced with silver beads. The vibrant necklaces go with the surroundings and look stunning with those strappy sundresses that are begging to be worn.
• <H4> This is how I welcome in summer. And I still have that nut the monkey threw at me. Thank you where ever you may be!
• <H1> Fashion tips from the 9 year old
• <H4> Gracie (#4 in the line of daughters) is my little fashionista. She often critiques her sister’s choices of outfits and has on occasion been known to send them back to their room to come up with another design that doesn’t offend her sensibilities. This usually happens to the 13-year-old who can’t seen to be bothered to iron, match nor pick out clothes that don’t look like one is going to dig for potatoes. When Gracie heard that I was writing a blog she immediately felt that the world would benefit from her advice. So here it is….
• <H4> Wear ruffles
• <H4> Wear pink everyday
• <H4> High heals make you taller and you can reach things in the cupboard
• <H4> Always wear jewelry that sparkles
• <H4> Accessorize with bows in your hair, ribbons and twisty buns because then people compliment you
• <H4> Don’t wear baggy jeans and ugly tops
• <H4> Leopard print always gets attention
• <H4> Don’t wear socks with sandals, ripped clothes, black lipstick or sneakers with dresses
• <H4> Put on cool, dangly earrings
• <H4> Always smile
• <H1> I don’t camp

• <H4> I always feel I have to preference that when people hear I’m from the Northwest because I have found that this world or at least this corner of the world can be divided in two halves: those that camp and those that don’t. I belong to the smaller “I don’t camp” half.  I also don’t fish, hike, bike, ski or take random trips into the mountains and I am sure that my husband and I hold some type of record for living the longest in Washington State without having been to the lake.
• <H4> Every summer the neighborhood gets very quiet as families set off in their motorhomes and campers and descend upon parks and forests across the state. I stand on the front steps with my wine spritzer and toast them. My major at one time in college was archeology and then I found out that archeologists have to actually spend time out in the field and I changed it back to English. The hallowed halls of upper academia was more my style then being surrounded by dirt. When I was in high school my parents took my sister and I camping but I think it was more out of guilt for living in a home whose backyard looked out at Glacier National Park then for any kind of desire to bond with the outdoors. Mind you this one and only camping experience was in a camper not a tent and when I found out that there was no where I could shave my legs I threatened to walk back home. Seriously, you can’t really take two morose teenagers and deposit them in the middle of the forest and expect to have a good time.
• <H4> So now I have four daughters and lo and behold one of them has this weird camping gene and she has been begging us to sleep out in the woods. We compromised and bought a tent at a garage sale and set it up in our backyard next to some trees. Part of our yard is a forest so that should count for something. Now she’s asking me to sleep in it with her and I’m actually considering it for the moment. At least I have some place to shave my legs in the morning!
