When I started this blog I thought that it would be a niche subject, but filmmakers all over the world are using the iphone to shoot with. In countries where film equipment is difficult to find young film makers are turning to the iphone to make their first film. Not only are they shooting short film, but they are shooting featurelength projects. Today we are going to be looking at a few short films shoot using the iphone 5 and 6.

The equipment is literally in your pocket and the ability to distribute your finish product to the world gets easier day by day as more distribution platforms come online each and everyday.

• <H2> The Short Film Most film makers begin their film making careers with a short film. The short film can be a great learning experience. You will learn all of the basics that will carry you through a feature film shoot.
• <H2> The rules that apply to a feature will still apply to your short film.
• <H2> You will need a script. In the case of a short film this script can be as short as five pages and as long as forty. It should be written in standard screenplay format and the structure should be the same. Meaning it should have a beginning, middle and end. Even if it is a one act conversation between two characters. Also you will want to keep the budget as low as possible. The short film is a learning experience and it should not cost thousands of dollars unless a ton of effects are to be added. • <H2> Next you will need to understand basic lighting and sound techniques. The difference between a quality film and one shot by an amateur is the lighting and how well the sound is recorded. There are lighting and sound tutorials to be found at this site. Check them out.
• <H2> You will need to find a cast. You can use friends or you can go out an call professionals. If you can afford to pay them or convince then to work for credit I would suggest hiring pros. Your film will be better for it and you will learn a ton from being around working actors.
• <H2> Watch a bunch of short films and as much behind the scene stuff as you can find. Also read interviews done with those who you admire. Digital film making is something that can be learned from studying those who have done it. A word on cameras. This site is dedicated to iphone filmmaking, but anything goes. You can shoot with a video camcorder. You can record your film with a Dslr if you want to. There are no rules except the ones that you create for yourself. This is going to be your film so anything goes.

If you are going to be taking the idea of using your iphone to shoot a film seriously then you will need a few tips.
• <H2> First you will need a iphone. You can use any model from the iphone 4s up to the lastest model. You will need apps that help you capture motion picture like footage. The best of these apps is named Filmic Pro. It will allow you to record at 24 frames per second this will make your footage look like film footage.
• <H2> You will need a script. A film that is made up as a film maker goes along will look like it. And you will not want that. Professionals show up with a screenplay. It is the map of your production. It list the shoots, the locations and tells the actors what to do. If you have never written a screenplay before you will need to do two things. First go one line a google free scripts. Read a few of the scripts to the movies that you love. Next get a book on how to do it and what you must consider while writing it. You can purchase some great low cost LED lights that are battery powered and can go almost anywhere. You will want a computer to edit your finished film on. You can edit on your smartphone and there are some great apps, but you will want a computer that is loaded with more powerful editing software to produce a better finished film.
• <H2> You will need to watch films. Watch as much iphone footage as possible.
• <H2> The last thing that you must keep in mind is to have fun. Film making should be fun. You are doing it to have fun. When doing something you love it fun and should not feel like a job.
