• <H3> Why Sayulita Film School? The Sayulita Film School offers students the opportunity to gain a comprehensive knowledge of the environment through hands on practical experience of planning, filming and editing a video that discusses eco technologies, eco living, building, and the social impact of our changing environment. Students will have unprecedented access to an off-the-grid eco community, set in a small town in Mexico where people are concerned about their environmental impact.  The interdisciplinary approach equips students with the critical and analytical skills to think through the many complex factors that influence our understanding of the environment. The output, a video posted on YouTube, explaining their unique perspective. Student projects can involve: The physical principles governing the environment. The social/cultural aspects that influence human behaviour towards the environment. How humans interact with and have an impact on the environment. How the concept of sustainability applies at a local, regional, national, and global level How systems theory applies to sustainability  The concepts of ecological and carbon footprints and determine personal footprints Calculate baseline energy, waste, water, and transportation Analyse the effects of humans on the planet – past, present, and future Describe historical and current landmarks and models in sustainable development Compare European/US/Canada’s standard of living to that of developing countries Assess measures taken to address poverty, education, and health inequalities Explain how education influences population growth, standard of living, and health Apply the concept of social responsibility to local, regional, national, and global issues Investigate connections between health and the environment Describe basic ecological systems and how humans have an impact on them Explain the role of carbon and the carbon cycle and how it relates to climate change Explain how climate change affects ecosystems, landscapes, and weather patterns  Analyse the importance of biodiversity and how it relates to sustainability Explain how TEK integrates the concept of sustainability Investigate outdoor spaces (e.g., school gardens, parks) and local flora and fauna Analyse the future viability of fossil fuels as an energy resource Compare alternative energy technologies Explain how past and current legislation helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions Identify sustainable approaches to local, regional, national, and global food production Identify issues related to Earth’s supply of freshwater and describe methods to conserve it Analyse the environmental, social, and economic significance of natural resource extraction Analyse transportation modes and compare resulting greenhouse gas emissions Describe elements of green building standards and explain how each reduces resource use Describe a sustainable community and how each element reduces resource use Identify and compare strategies to reduce or eliminate waste going tolandfills Compare “growth” economics with “triple bottom line” economics Evaluate how personal choices in consumption affect the environment Demonstrate an understanding of concepts related to the green economy Research opportunities as we transition to a green economy Create and implement a plan to reduce personal/school ecological or carbon footprints Identify and compare strategies to influence behavioural change Create or implement an action plan/activity to make communities more sustainable Identify resources and organizations to help bring about environmental change
• <H3> What is the process? Before you arrive in Sayulita, students are required to submit a plan.  This includes the idea, the shot list and storyboard/mood board.  Students can flush out their ideas with our instructors via our forum or directly through Skype.  Specific requests for stock video, ideal interviews, or animations can be made in advance of the arriving.  Interviews are scheduled BEFORE arrival. Room and board is not included.  However, the film school will provide a list of prefered hotels, and potential home stays.   The first two 1/2 days include training on Adobe Premiere.  Equipment is rented out (no extra charge) to students.  Each student is required to backup their project every day.  Interviews and b-roll are shot throughout the week and edited together in the afternoons/evenings.  Editing systems are locked up at 8 PM every evening.  Students can request a spanish translator from the Costa Verde Eco School. The top videos are showcased to the students of Costa Verde Eco School.  All videos are uploaded to the Sayulita Film School Youtube Channel. What is included?
