•
OLD MINING TOWN HOTELS
 •
Our youngest son is in the United States Navy and at this particular time he is residing in Fallon, Nevada and stationed at the Naval Air Base. We reside in Kingman, AZ so it’s roughly an 8 plus hours drive with the pit stops. In order to get there we have to pass through Las Vegas to get to Route 95. It has been some 35 years since I traveled this route with my parents and I didn’t remember that much then but on this first trip up to see my son and family I took it all in. TONOPAH is halfway between Las Vegas and Reno. Along the way there are several notable towns such as Beatty, Goldfield once big boom mining towns in the early 20th Century.
 •
Not far out of Las Vegas To the West is a pit stop called Area 51 Alien Center where you find Good Food, Gas and all the Alien Souvenirs you want. This stretch of Hwy. is called Extraterrestrial Hwy located in Hiko, NV. Further up the road you start seeing signs that urge you NOT to pick up Hitchhikers that is because as you keep going west you pass by Nevada’s High Desert State Prison……I would follow the signs.
 •
One of our favorite places to stop along the Hwy is Beatty, NV. For one it’s the dropping off part to Death Valley if you have that desire. Having lived in Calif. for 50 years I never did have that desire. In Beatty there is a place called The Beef Jerky Store where we stop every time. They have Stuffed Olives, Pistachios, Desert Honey and the best Teriaki Jerky I have ever had. It’s a small place but there sign over their building are bright Red, White and Green. If you ever find yourself on Hwy 95 check it out. Another one of our favorite stops is the Death Valley Nut and Candy Store. Everytime we’ve been there it’s always so busy. The store has tons of Candy, Nuts and Souviners to chose from. There’s also a Subway and Ice Cream Shop inside the building. It also has a very nice Gas Station. The town has several nice Motels. This is a very nice place to get out and stretch your legs and use the facilities.
 •
About 70 miles up the road still West is the old semi-abandoned Mining Ghost Town of Goldfield that still have original buildings standing. There is the brick firehouse with a refurbished fire engine of its day out front, fire engine red. As I pass through this town I try to imagine in my mind what it looked like in its heydays and how this place thrived. there is really not many buildings left but the one that stands out to me and that I’m fascinated with is the Goldfield Hotel still standing old and sad looking and assumed to be Haunted. Gold was discovered here in Goldfield around 1902 and when word got out the town exploded and became at one time the largest City in Nevada. In 1908 The Goldfield Hotel opened its doors and became quite successful. The Hotel sits on the same site as a hotel named the Nevada Hotel which burned down in 1905. Approximately two years after the Goldfield Hotel opened the Gold was beginning to decrease and by the early 20’s the Gold was gone and the town was down to approximately 1500 citizens and just a few years later the town was devastated by a fire that’s took many many homes and businesses. As of this time the town is down is down to approximately 500 people. As far as the Haunting there are stories of a Murder by the Owner of his Pregnant Mistress and of three suicides. The hotel was once considered to be one of the most luxurious hotels between San Francisco and Chicago and brought some of the most elite people to town and was a big success. But as Gold dwindled so did the people who came to Goldfield. The hotel slowly became a paupers hotel during the 30’s. During World II the Army Air Corp housed military personnel who were stationed at the Tonopah Air Base some 25 miles north of Goldfield in the hotel. After the last of the soldiers left the hotel closed its doors forever. The Goldfield Hotel has had many owners all with the hope of refurbishing it. I would love to one day see this hotel restored to its former glory. You can find out so much more about this hotel and the town with the Internet by just typing in Goldfield Hotel Ne.vada.
 •
As we continued on Hwy 95 it starts turning to where we are going North West and 25 miles past Goldfield is another one. time mining town of Tonopah. This town like most mining towns has seen its ups and down and has many interesting stories and is rich in history. Of of 2015 Tonopah is thriving, not like in the peak of the mining period but more than 2600 people live here and it is the County Seat of Nye County in Nevada. Tonopah has a Elementary/Middle School and High School, Motels, Shops and great food at the Tonopah Station Hotel/Casino/Restaurant. On this visit to Tonopah we needed a place to stay. The Best Western and Tonopah Hotel were full, there was the Clown Motel but no offense that gave us the creeps…….LOL……..Our last chance was this old restored brick building that had a huge sign with the name Mizpah Hotel with the Vacacy sign on. My Daughter got out, went in, and came back with keys to two rooms on the fifth floor for My Son, Her and I……she said Mom…..”you are going to love the inside of this place”…….I was feeling excited about it. I would have loved to run in there but I use a cane so running was out of the question but I tell you what when I got to the front door of this hotel I was already liking this place. The door was of dark wood with gorgeous stained glass windows and to my looking there were two sets of doors due to cold winter weather the town get. When I opened the second set of doors I feel like I stepped back in time to the early 20th Century, it was so amazing and beautiful. High Back tapestry chairs and sofa and love seats with solid wood pillars and a gorgeous hard wood Bar, named The Wyatt Earp Bar because according to legend Wyatt Earp kept the saloon at the Mizpah but also according to legend the Mizpah wasn’t even built when Wyatt was in town. Makes for a good story anyways. The hotel has one single original restored elevator with brass handles……..okay the elevator was a tad scary but I couldn’t do stairs so the elevator it was. Everytime I got on that darn elevator my butt hit the alarm button which was connected to the local fire house, even they had to laugh about it. Oh and the carpet was an old looking pattern but new…….don’t I discribe places well….LOL…….the Lobby to each floor are all decorated to back in time. In the morning you walked out your room to the foyer and there was hot coffee set up. In each room there is a little newspaper that tells you a little about the hotel and the towns history. The Mizpah is a five story hotel that opened its doors in 1908 and is named after the Mizpah Mine of the day. One of the main and more talked about stories is “The Lady In Red” which we became enthralled with. The Lady in Red was a Lady of the Evening at the hotel who was beaten and killed by her ex-boyfriend on the fifth floor. According to stories read her boyfriend did not know that she was a prostitute and he became enraged at her and killed her, what happened to the man nobody seems to know. Such a tragic story really. The one picture of her shows her as quite beautiful. You can buy a bottle of wine with her image on the bottle and of course we had to get the beautiful Mizpah Wine Glasses. Since her death there have been sightings of The Lady In Red throughout the hotel but mainly on the fifth floor, remember earlier I mentioned our rooms being on the fifth floor. People also hear noises and things being moved around others claims are a Pearl gets left on their pillow. The Lady in Red is not the only ghostly presence heard, there is one of a little boy and a man for which I don’t know the stories on those yet.
 •
Every morning when guests check out of the hotel they have a Ghostly story to tell and we were not the exception………My Daughter and I stayed in one room my son in the other. In our room we heard a whistle twice about ten minutes apart. My daughter was just stepping into the bathroom and I was propped up in bed, after the first whistle we looked at each other puzzled because I cant whistle period neither does she. So she quickly opened the door and saw no one, we didn’t hear a door close cause you differently here those being the doors are heavy and slam shut. My son didn’t hear anything at all. Maybe it was the pipes or something, it is an old hotel after all. Ten minutes later we heard the same whistle……the whistle a man makes at a hot looking woman whistle……still nothing, nobody around, do doors, etc. we couldn’t explain it. Before we went to bed we positioned a wrapped fortune cookie on this table with a patterned tile. We lined up the cookie on certain dots and took pictures of it and we ask the lady in red to move them if she wanted to. I was the first to wake up and immediately checked the cookie and wether you chose to believe this the cookie had been turned a quarter of the way around. I woke my daughter and we were stunned. The table was very heavy and would be hard to move, we had no air on and no window was open or a fan on. Can’t explain it. We have since stayed there two more times since with no activity to us.
 •
I love old Hotel and have been fortunate to spend nights in a lot of Historic ones. My Son in the Navy is now being stationed up in Washington State so I hope to discover more historic hotels and towns. I have flown but I’m petrified to anymore so I’m back to traveling by car or train……oh which reminds me I have some good train trip stories……next time
