- <H2> As we approach the end of the school year I am always looking for new ways to engage students. Gamification is the process of using gaming principles in your classroom to increase student interest. Five years ago this was a labor intensive task, although a lot of fun with the kids, it required lots of paper work to push around. I originally pulled my ideas from the book "The Multiplayer Classroom." I was pleased to discover this fall that a new website has taken this book to the next level. Classcraft.com takes the principals of gamification and digital learning to new heights. You can now track student progress in a quest like game in your classroom. XP points can be assigned for any reason and students can earn and lose points throughout the classroom. My favorite part is that it is designed as a cooperative venture. Each student has a different role that can assist another in working though class challenges. - <H2> Microscopes in the middle school science classroom.
- <H2> I have been considering the idea of what's the perfect microscope lesson in the middle school classroom. Because middle school students are so unique in their curiosities and understandings, I believe it's necessary to provide a balance between science skills and curiosity. For the labs I begin with some structured time to explore all the parts that move. Look at their fingers and various other little curiosities. This has worked out very well. When I get to the part of actually teaching them about making wet mounts, using scopes and handling materials they are much more attentive. This has led to more days using the microscopes, but student responses and engagement have been great. My final lessons for microscope introduction is a 2 day lesson linked out below. I have used many of the standard ideas in lab, from viewing letters to making wet-mounts. However, I have included a "Thread Challenge" which requires the students to use string to create slide puzzles for their classmates. Microscope Lesson 1Microscope Lesson 2
