- <H3> ** The Compatibility Fatality Factor is the ratio of the driver fatality rate for a vehicle based on its class and weight versus the driver fatality rate for an average size passenger car (3200 lbs.). The relative weight of a vehicle compared with one it collides with in a head-on crash is a critical determinant of the forces the occupants are subjected to, however neither size or weight are evaluated in crash test ratings and must be evaluated separately. Vehicles with a Compatibility Fatality Factor greater than 1.0 have been culled from this safest vehicles list.
- <H3> *** The frontal collision avoidance system evaluation conducted by IIHS assigns 1-to-6 points to vehicles equipped with frontal collision-avoidance systems. The best score possible is 6 which requires a demonstrated reduction in impact speed of at least 22 m.p.h. Score = 1 indicates that only Collision Warning is available (not auto-brake) and "NO" designates that equipment is Not Offered by the manufacturer. Note collision avoidance has not been factored into the safety assessment since collision avoidance cannot replace fundamental crashworthiness; however when vehicles have equivalent crash ratings and compatibility fatality factors the vehicle with the highest crash avoidance score is safer. Visit www.IIHS.org for score comparisons of optional vs. standard equipment. [No vehicles prior to model-year 2013 have been evaluated.].
- <H3> **** Headlamps performance ratings have not been factored into the safety assessment. Some vehicles offer multiple headlamps versions, depending on trim package and/or optional equipment and those ratings may be different. Visit www.IIHS.org for ratings of available headlamp versions.
