• <H2> As a child, music was my playground.   I would lose myself for hours at the piano.  I loved the joy, challenge and discovery of the instrument.  With music, I found the magic of story-telling, the power of expression, and the art of practice.  It wasn’t about being the best, beating out the competition or a pressure to perform or be famous.  It was about enjoying music and being the best I could be in a discipline that I loved.
• <H2> I believe that in teaching students to love music, you teach them to love themselves.   That to really nurture a child you have to see and hear them for who they are.  My piano and voice lessons are structured and tailored to fit your child’s needs and interests.  This isn’t to say that the lessons will always be easy or without challenge.  I believe you build self-esteem through work and coming out the other side of challenges that initially seemed impossible.  I push my students to realize their potential, whether it’s helping a child tap into their dynamic expression as a pianist, bringing out the voice in a shy vocal student who sings in a whisper or channeling the power of a boisterous fourth-grader into a belt that is both energetic and healthy.  I believe music lessons should be a partnership between the child, the parents, and myself.  I never stop believing in my students or working with their families to get the most out of their practice at home and time in the lesson.  My students inspire me and bring me back to my first musical discoveries.  It is a thrill and honor to be there as a teacher and coach for their trials and triumphs!

• <H2> Whether you want to introduce your child to the piano in hopes of turning it into a lifelong passion or your child has played for years and is looking to go in a new direction, I enjoy working with students of all ages and abilities!

• <H2> I am a classically trained pianist with experience in classical competitions.  I also have extensive experience in contemporary styles and have worked as a singer-songwriter, accompanist and studio session player.

• <H2> I typically organize my piano lessons into four sections: Theory/Note Spelling, Technique/Finger exercises, Lesson Book material (selected specifically for each student from methods including Schaum, Thompson, and Bastien), and a supplementary piece (usually a pop/rock song, movie theme or classical piece of the student’s choosing).  These categories are flexible, depending on the age and ability of the student.  However, I’ve found work in all categories leads to maximum growth as a pianist.  I’ve also found student participation in selecting material is crucial to their continued interest, especially at first.  I do everything in my power to find sheet music for whatever songs motivate my students to practice!

• <H2> I also offer a piano and voice option for trained singers, who desire to accompany themselves on the piano.  These lessons are less book-driven and focus primarily on chord improvisation and song material.  My training as a singer-songwriter (in addition to my  background in classical piano) make this track a unique fit for singers looking to grow as solo performers or to prepare for collegiate musical theatre program auditions.

• <H2> Whether your child is gearing up for the school play or to audition professionally, I enjoy working with children of all abilities and ambitions.  A positive attitude and playful spirit is the only prerequisite!

• <H2> I am trained in speech-level singing, a technique developed by renowned vocal coaches, Seth Riggs and Roger Love.  This technique focuses on creating one unified vocal range by developing the middle/mix voice.  Singers, such as Alicia Keys, Idina Menzel (i.e. Wicked, Rent, Frozen), Barbara Streisand, Steve Perry from Journey, and Sting all have smooth, seamless ranges that rely on this type of vocal development.

• <H2> Voice lessons begin with vocal warm-ups tailored to the needs of the particular student followed by song selections, typically a mixture of musical theatre and pop/rock songs. As a working accompanist, I love being able to give my vocal students the feel of real-time accompaniment.  Along with my extensive sheet music library, I can read any sheet music a student brings to lessons (i.e. audition, callback, or show material).  I am also able to make practice tracks for students to use at home.  This can prove invaluable when preparing for auditions and performances and not to mention fun!
