  • <H1> Grant to Support Salute to First Responders Houghton, NY – The Allegany County Area Foundation is pleased to announce a $1,000 grant to The Genesee Rapids Baseball Program. Dr. Ralph P. Kerr, General Manager of the Genesee Rapids Baseball Team stated, “This money will be used to support the First Responders Recognition Day to be held on Sunday, July 2nd at 2pm when the Rapids play the Wellsville Nitros. All First Responders and their families will be given free admission, reduced prices on food and a gift of appreciation.” The Genesee Rapids Baseball Team, a member of the New York Collegiate Baseball League located in Upstate New York, play their home games on the baseball field at Houghton College. This league provides college players the opportunity to develop their skills at a higher level of play, gain experience with wood bats, and be evaluated by Major League Baseball scouts. Their season will begin in early June and will run through early August. Grants such as this one are made possible through the generous gifts from Allegany County residents. The ACAF Grant Committee, chaired by Rod Bennett, awards grants to worthy non-profit organizations in Allegany County.  The application due date for the next grant cycle is on August 30th. This program will be held at the Genesee Valley Central School beginning at 3:00 pm. All recipients should report by 2:40 pm. A dessert reception will be held immediately following the program. The public is invited to attend. This year the Allegany County Area Foundation Dollars for Scholars will award a total of $247,500 to 124 recipients representing all of the high schools in Allegany County. These recipients were chosen from a total of 248 applicants. Caleb Holmes, a 2012 graduate of the Cuba-Rushford High School, will be the guest speaker. He graduated from Daemen College in 2015 and is currently a dental student at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. The Allegany County Area Foundation Dollars for Scholars manages thirty different scholarships.  This year two different scholarships will be awarded for the first time. They are the Ann Swift Memorial Nursing Scholarship and the Betty Embser Wattenberg Community Service Scholarship. The Ann Swift Memorial Nursing Scholarship was created by Ellsworth Swift to honor his wife who passed away in 2014. Ann Swift had worked for the State of North Carolina at the Caswell Developmental Center for several years nursing mentally handicapped patients. The recipients of this scholarship must be a graduate of the Cuba-Rushford High School who is pursuing a degree in a nursing program. The “Betty Embser Wattenberg Community Service Scholarship Fund” honors Elizabeth “Betty” Embser Wattenberg who passed away in March of 2016. This scholarship has been created by her husband, Marc and her son, Brendon. Kottwitz, Economic Development Associate for the Southern Tier West Regional Planning and Development Board. Halley is a participant in the current Leadership Allegany cohort. Leadership Allegany is a joint initiative of Houghton College and the Greater Allegany County Chamber of Commerce. The program provides a dynamic learning environment where adult professionals who live, work or have vested interest in Allegany County grow their leadership abilities, create connections, and impact their communities. Participants meet two times a month for ten months, including a full-day opening retreat. Industry days provide participants with an in-depth, insider’s view of Allegany County industries through the professionals who lead them – including government, the judicial system, manufacturing, agriculture, and many more. They engage in site tours, hear from speakers, and enjoy panel discussions. Curriculum sessions challenge participants to dig deep into their leadership values using the Social Model for Leadership, developed by the Higher Education Research Institute of UCLA. They begin by exploring their own personal strengths, moving gradually from the self to small group engagement to community impact. Participants work in small groups throughout the year to plan an industry day and conduct a community service project that supports individuals or service organizations in the county. Patty Preston, advisor to the Belfast Central School High School Online Newspaper and Literary Magazine, explained that both of these publications enhance a culture around literacy, which in turn supports learning in all content areas. She said, “Student achievement in all areas (sports, academics, community service) is documented through The Beacon. Personal experiences are shared in essays and reinforce common humanity in a public way.
